Book Beginnings and Friday 56 – Doctor Who and the Planet of the Daleks (June 21)

doctor who and the planet of the daleksFor this week’s Friday meme combo I have picked an old favourite that I think I may have to read soon – Doctor Who and the Planet of the Daleks by Terrance Dicks. I need to do something to pass the time waiting for the 50th anniversary special, so I’m going to have to seek out  more of these stories to read. This one features the third Doctor, who was the first one I remember watching. The back cover has the following short description:

Jo peered through the panel and saw — nothing. Yet someone had entered the cabin. She could hear hoarse breathing and stealthy padding footsteps. A beaker rose in the air of its own accord, then dropped to the floor… The Invisible Enemy

After pursuing the Daleks through Space, Doctor Who lands on the Planet of Spiridon, in the midst of a tropical jungle… and finds more than Daleks. Vicious plants spitting deadly poison, invisible Spiridons attacking from all sides and, in hiding, a vast army waits… for the moment to mobilise and conquer.

Now for this week’s excerpts:

book beginningsBook Beginnings is hosted by Gilion at Rose City Reader, who invites anyone to join in, saying: ‘Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.  Please remember to include the title of the book and the author. Leave a link to your post.  If you don’t have a blog, but want to participate, please leave a comment with your Book Beginning.’

The beginning of Doctor Who and the Planet of the Daleks:

The tall white-haired man lay still as death. The girl leaning over him could find no pulse, no beat from either of his hearts. His skin was icy cold to the touch.

Nice beginning and no prizes for guessing who this man is 🙂

Friday 56The Friday 56 is a book meme hosted by Freda’s Voice and the rules are as follows:

*Grab a book, any book.
*Turn to page 56.
*Find any sentence, (or few, just don’t spoil it) that grabs you.
*Post it.
*Add your (url) post below in Linky. Add the post url, not your blog url.

It’s that simple.

From page 56 of Doctor Who and the Planet of the Daleks:

He touched a control, there was a shower of sparks, and the lift dropped like a stone. Codal sank to the floor, hands over his ears, which were popping with the rapidly changing pressure.

As well as reading some of the books, I’m going to spend the summer re-watching as many episodes of Doctor Who with my kids. I’m also keen to find out who the next Doctor is going to be. These are exciting times to be a Doctor Who fan.
