Teaser Tuesdays – Doctor Who: The Five Doctors (Oct 7)

teasertuesdays2014eTeaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Here are my teasers for this week:

doctor who the five doctorsSeconds later, the Doctor was streaking down the road in the opposite direction, leaving a black skid-mark on the road behind him, and a smell of burning rubber in the air. He checked his driving mirror and saw, with indignant surprise, that the obelisk was tumbling rapidly down the road in pursuit – and it was gaining fast.

Book Beginnings and Friday 56 – Frontier Worlds (Sept 12)

frontier worldsThis week for my Friday meme combo I have chosen one of the Doctor Who books I bought on my holiday – Frontier Worlds by Peter Anghelides. We picked up quite a few Doctor Who books on our holiday, but I need to get started reading them soon! Goodreads has the following description:

What strange attraction lures people to the planet Drebnar? When the TARDIS is dragged there, the Doctor determines to find out why. He discovers that scientists from the Frontier Worlds Corporation have set up a base on the planet, and are trying to blur the distinction between people and plants.

Now for this week’s excerpts:

book beginningsBook Beginnings is hosted by Gilion at Rose City Reader, who invites anyone to join in, saying: ‘Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.  Please remember to include the title of the book and the author. Leave a link to your post.  If you don’t have a blog, but want to participate, please leave a comment with your Book Beginning.’

The beginning of Frontier Worlds:

‘I can remember my twenty-fourth birthday like it was yesterday,’ said Shar Mozarno. ‘But I can’t recall what I had for lunch today.’

I like this beginning. It sounds so much like me most days.

Friday 56The Friday 56 is a book meme hosted by Freda’s Voice and the rules are as follows:

*Grab a book, any book.
*Turn to page 56.
*Find any sentence, (or few, just don’t spoil it) that grabs you.
*Post it.
*Add your (url) post below in Linky. Add the post url, not your blog url.

It’s that simple.

From page 56 of Frontier Worlds:

I nodded again, feeling a yawn start at the corners of my jaw, and suppressing it.

That sounds a lot like me as well! I think I’ll enjoy this one, especially as it is about the eighth doctor, who, of course, only starred in one TV movie. I have a few other books with him in them as well, so hopefully I’ll get round to reading them all eventually!

Bookmark Monday – Doctor Who (Dec 30)

bookmark-mondayBookmark Monday is a weekly meme hosted by Aloi from guiltless reading. Take a picture of one of your favourite bookmarks, post it on your blog, and head over to guiltless reading to share a link to your post.

One of the really neat things that our kids did for my wife and I this year at Christmas was surprise us with a bunch of homemade gifts. One of my favourites was some Doctor Who bookmarks in a custom folder. They are double sided and include all 11 Doctors, the TARDIS, and some of his alien enemies. They are a one of a kind gift that I will certainly use and treasure:

Stacking The Shelves (Dec 28)

STSmall_thumb2Stacking The Shelves is a weekly book meme hosted at Tynga’s Reviews. Here is what you need to do to participate:

Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks! If you want to find out more about Stacking The Shelves, please visit the official launch page!

I was very fortunate to receive some books for Christmas. As well as the eight pictured below, I also received an Indigo gift-card for $50.00. So it was a great Christmas for me. Here are the books I received on Christmas Day:

Top Ten Tuesday – Winter TBR List (Dec 10)

TTT3WTop Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week a different topic is posted inviting the participants to come up with a list of ten things to do with the topic.

This week’s topic is: ‘Top Ten Books On My Winter TBR’. I haven’t done a top ten for a few months and I think the last one I did was my Fall TBR list, which didn’t work out too well – I only read one of them. My winter list is very dependent on whether I get any of the books on my Christmas wishlist or not. So, I’ll stick to books I already have, acknowledging that this may change in a couple of weeks time.

  2. So Yesterday – Scott Westerfeld

  5. The Living – Annie Dillard
