Saturday Snapshot – Labyrinth (June 6)

Saturday Snapshot is hosted by West Metro Mommy. Go there to see how you can participate.

Last week I took the opportunity to visit the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes in Sudbury, as I wanted to check out the labyrinth there before we move later this month. It was worth the visit and I’m sorry I didn’t take the opportunity sooner, as it is a quiet and peaceful place. Here are a few of the snapshots I took:

Saturday Snapshot – Waxwings (April 11)

I took these pictures a couple of months ago in February when the tree in our front yard was having its annual visit from the Bohemian Waxwings. They always arrive for a few days in either January or February and strip the tree bare of its berries. I should have posted these then, but I never quite got around to it.

Saturday Snapshot – Twilight (Oct 25)

Earlier this week on one night where it was pleasant and calm, and not too chilly, my son and I took the opportunity of going out in the early evening for a walk. For once I actually remembered to take my camera. The light was failing, but I liked the way the streetlight in the following pictures was lighting up the path and the almost bare trees, so I snapped a few pics to try and capture the moment.

Saturday Snapshot – John Rae (Sept 27)

This week I’m sharing a few more photos from our trip to Orkney this past summer. They are pictures of a statue of John Rae that stands in Stromness, Orkney. I’m sharing these now because John Rae is finally being officially recognised next Tuesday at a ceremony and plaque unveiling in Westminster Abbey. This restoration of his reputation is long overdue and will please many people who over the years have worked hard to see this happen, especially the Canadian writer, Ken McGoogan, who told Rae’s story in his book, Fatal Passage.

Saturday Snapshot – The Old Man of Hoy (Sept 20)

This week I’m again sharing something from our summer trip to Orkney. On one of the ferry journeys to Orkney you sail past what is known as ‘The Old Man of Hoy‘. Which is a red sandstone sea stack on the island of Hoy. It is one of the highest sea stacks in Britain and has been climbed successfully a number of times over the years since the first climb in 1966. On our trip to Orkney it was a very clear day, as can be seen in the first picture. However, it was very foggy on our return trip, which I have also shown for comparison.

Saturday Snapshot – Skara Brae (Sept 13)

This past summer we travelled ‘home’ to Orkney, where I grew up. One of the always impressive places we visited was Skara Brae, which is only a ten minute drive from my parents’ house. When I grew up there this was one of the places I took for granted, but each time I go back and see it now I realise how amazing it really is.
