I had lunch today with a group of leaders from various churches in our community. There was a lot of challenging conversation around some of the social justice issues that are very prevalent in our town. We all agreed, though, that it has to get beyond just talking, which is not always bad, to actually following through on some of our thoughts and ideas. Elliot Lake has been through a lot in the past few years and is still struggling to overcome the aftermath of the mall collapse almost three years ago. More than anything else the church needs to be the church, doing what we can to be an integral part of helping the community to move forward and out of the current doldrums.
As is often the case, my mind went back to the following words from Amos 5: 21-24, which are always challenging:
