Booking Through Thursday – Your Recommendation (Sept 11)

btt2This week Booking Through Thursday poses the following question:

If a friend asks you to recommend a really good book—good writing, good characters, good story—but with no other qualifications … what would you recommend?

This is a fairly easy question. My first recommendation would always be The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. It is my all-time favourite read – the writing is great, there are lots of great characters, and the story is also great. My second choice would be a more recent book – The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden by Jonas Jonasson, which is also a great read. On another day I might suggest something else as my second choice, because there are too many great reads to choose from.

  1. I tried The Hobbit. I got bored about a third of the way through and gave up. I hear that’s a common reaction to The Hobbit, though, and I should just dive into the LOTR trilogy. Liking the movies suggests that I’d probably like the books, too, right?

    • Although I really love The Hobbit, I can understand where you’re coming from. It has been with me from a young age and I’ve just grown with it. As for LOTR, I don’t think you’d fare much better, as in my mind it is a more mature version of The Hobbit. The movies are good, but they don’t tell the story well, in my opinion. Thanks for visiting and good luck with LOTR, if you decide to give it a go.
