Book Beginnings and Friday 56 – The Clockwork Scarab (Oct 4)

clockwork scarab largeThis week I have chosen The Clockwork Scarab by Colleen Gleason for my Friday meme combo. I received an ARC of this book from LibraryThing earlier in the week and started reading it tonight. It looks interesting and I think I will enjoy it. The following description comes from the back cover:

Evaline Stoker and Mina Holmes never meant to get into the family business. But when you’re the sister of Bram and the niece of Sherlock, vampire hunting and mystery solving are in your blood. And when two society girls go missing, there’s no one more qualified to investigate.

Now fierce Evaline and logical Mina must resolve their rivalry, navigate the advances of not just one but three mysterious gentlemen, and solve murder with only one clue: a strange Egyptian scarab. The stakes are high. If Stoker and Holmes don’t unravel why the belles of London society are in such danger, they’ll become the next victims.

Now for this week’s excerpts:

book beginningsBook Beginnings is hosted by Gilion at Rose City Reader, who invites anyone to join in, saying: ‘Please join me every Friday to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.  Please remember to include the title of the book and the author. Leave a link to your post.  If you don’t have a blog, but want to participate, please leave a comment with your Book Beginning.’

The beginning of The Clockwork Scarab:

There are a limited number of excuses for a young, intelligent woman of seventeen to be traversing the fog-shrouded streets of London at midnight. A matter of protecting one’s or preventing another’s death are two obvious ones.

This is not a bad beginning. Both of these reasons sound fairly reasonable and I’m thinking that there may be a death or two around the corner, but I’ll have to wait and see.

Friday 56The Friday 56 is a book meme hosted by Freda’s Voice and the rules are as follows:

*Grab a book, any book.
*Turn to page 56.
*Find any sentence, (or few, just don’t spoil it) that grabs you.
*Post it.
*Add your (url) post below in Linky. Add the post url, not your blog url.

It’s that simple.

From page 56 of A Clockwork Scarab:

I fumbled the Steam-Stream gun out and into my grip. It took me longer than it should have, yet the intruder held up his hands and said, “Don’t worry, I’m not going to hurt you.”

“Of course you aren’t,” I said, juggling the gun into position, pointing at him from my seat.

Whoever this person is, they mean business. I’m looking forward to getting into this book more over the weekend, if time allows.
