Today is the 78th birthday of probably the greatest living composer in the world today, Arvo Pärt. He is an Estonian composer of classical and sacred music, famous for his self-invented tintinnabuli composition technique. His music, which tends to be very minamilistic in style, is often hauntingly beautiful, and has been used in a number of recent movies – two of these being There Will Be Blood and Wit.
If you haven’t heard any of his music, it’s worth checking out. A good start is The Very Best of Arvo Pärt, a double CD containing many of his more famous pieces, including versions of the ones in the videos below, which are among my favourites. I hope you enjoy these:
