Weekend update – Elliot Lake tragedy

It hasn’t been the best of weekends, unfortunately. On Saturday at approximately 2.15pm a tragedy occurred in our little community of Elliot Lake in Northern Ontario. Part of the roof/parking lot of our local mall collapsed and at least two vehicles crashed through the floors below, right through the food court and landing by the entrance to a busy grocery store. At this point (Monday morning) one person has been confirmed deceased, there is at least one other trapped (status unknown), and there are about nine people unaccounted for, who may or may not have been in the mall at the time.

When something like this happens anywhere it is a sad thing, but it is especially felt in a small place like our of approximately 11,000 people, where most people know each other. The rescue is taking a long time, because they are trying to make the building to be made safe and secure. No names have been released as yet, but I don’t think that anyone I’m close to was there at the time. However, if they are local, then I will probably know who they are.

If you are the praying type, please pray for those involved in this terrible event – the rescue teams, the volunteers on hand, and the families of those most affected by this. I’ll be taking a break from some of my usual posting this week (book memes, reviews, etc.) because it is so hard to concentrate on any of that stuff when this tragedy is still unfolding on our doorstep.

All the major news companies are here covering the event. Some of the links are as follows:

There are probably others, but these should give you a picture of what our community is up against.
