This week I’m sharing some Cousin Silas. My friend Thomas introduced me to the music of Cousin Silas. I like to listen to it whilst I read, because it helps me relax and the music mixes well with my reading and doesn’t intrude in any way. If you enjoy these tracks, then head over to weareallghosts, which is a fairly new non-commercial netlabel, founded by Thomas to showcase independent musicians. The latest Cousin Silas album is available for download there. In the meantime, enjoy some Cousin Silas:
In One Corner of the Sky (Jupiter Sings) – Cousin Silas
Of Ancient Ways – Cousin Silas
Rediscovered – Cousin Silas

I watched the 2012 Olympics Closing Ceremony on Sunday night. It was an interesting mix of music and performers, supposedly showcasing the best of British. Mostly it was good stuff, except perhaps Jessie J singing We Will Rock You and the part with Russell Brand. Also I felt that two songs by George Michael was two too many. My biggest disappointment was the quick collection of David Bowie clips. Some of his greatest songs were featured, but not to play the full version of any of them really baffled me. So, to put things straight, I’m featuring three of them for this week’s Tune In Tuesday:
Ziggy Stardust – David Bowie
Changes – David Bowie
Space Oddity – David Bowie
Tune In Tuesday – Rush (August 7)

This week I’ve chosen a couple of my favourite Rush songs. I’ve been a big fan of Rush for over 30 years – they were my favourite Canadian band long before I even had any thoughts of moving here! I hope you enjoy these as much as I do:
Driven – Rush
Closer to the Heart – Rush

For July GReads asks the following:
What were you listening to when you were a teenager? We all come from different decades, with different tunes. For this month, please pick some of your favorite songs that bring you back to those glorious teenage years!
For the final post of my teen years I have picked 1979, which was the year I became a teenager. I wasn’t buying much music then, but I always listened to the weekly Top 40 Countdown on Radio 1 on Tuesday morning before going to school and caught Top of the Pops on BBC1 when I could. So, here are some of the top selling songs of 1979 (in the UK):
I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor
(I’m not a Gloria Gaynor fan, but I included this as it was #1 in the UK on my 13th birthday)
Cars – Gary Numan
Crazy Little Thing Called Love – Queen
Message in a Bottle – The Police
Another Brick in the Wall Part II – Pink Floyd

This week I have chosen 1984, which was a great year for music. It was the year I celebrated my 18th birthday and I was working full-time for the Royal Mail, so I was spending lots of money on music and books! Here are some of my favourite music releases of 1984:
68 Guns – The Alarm
Fugazi – Marillion
Distant Early Warning – Rush
Radio Ga Ga – Queen
Pride (In the Name of Love) – U2

For this week’s post I have chosen 1980, which is the year that I discovered Heavy Metal! I was 14 and spent most of my pocket money on music. Here are some of the tunes I bought in 1980, which seems like an eternity ago now:
Back in Black – AC/DC
Ace of Spades – Motorhead
Heavy Metal Thunder – Saxon
The Spirit of Radio – Rush
Play the Game – Queen

This week I have chosen 1985, which was the last of my teenage years. It was also the first year I flew across the Atlantic (landing in Chicago), not knowing that I would eventually live on this side of the pond! Other things that happened in 1985 were: I bought my first car, a yellow Vauxhall Chevette, and passed my driving test.
Here are some of my favourite tunes from 1985:
And She Was – Talking Heads
Kayleigh – Marillion
When Love Breaks Down – Prefab Sprout
In A Lifetime – Clannad and Bono
Alive and Kicking – Simple Minds
